Stroke

Stroke is caused by a block in the blood flow or disruption of an artery that feeds the brain. This makes brain cells suddenly die because of lack of oxygen. The patients may lose the ability to speak, face memory problems, or one side of the body may become paralyzed.

There are two types of strokes:

Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. Ischemic stroke may be also caused by clogged artery.

Hemorrhagic stroke happens when a blood vessel in part of the brain becomes weak and bursts open, so blood leaks into the brain.

Who can get stroke?

Anyone can suffer from stroke. However, the risk factors for stroke include as follow:

• Over 55 years of age
• Male (usually have higher risk than females)
• A family history of stroke
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Smoking cigarettes
• Diabetes
• Obesity
• Heart disease
• Cocaine use
• Heavy alcohol intake
• Men from broken families

Symptoms:

• Dizziness, imbalance, walking problem
• Speech problems
• Numbness, paralysis on one side of the body
• Blurred, double vision
• Unexpected severe headache

Prevention:

Stroke can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle:

• Controlling blood pressure
• Not smoking
• Reducing cholesterol, sodium and fat intake
• Follow a healthy diet with tomatoes that is rich in lycopene. This powerful antioxidant can reduce significantly risk of developing stroke.
• Reducing alcohol intake
• Treating diabetes properly
• Exercising regularly
• Managing stress
• Not using drug
• Drinking green tea
