This week on Music Across Borders, it’s British indie rock band Scouting For Girls and tracks from their self-titled debut, which includes the UK Top-Ten single, “She’s So Lovely.”
Indie rock band Scouting For Girls was founded in 2005 in London by lead vocalist and pianist Roy Stride. Joining him are school-friends Greg Churchouse on bass guitar and Peter Ellard on drums.
The group’s name is a tongue-in-cheek play on the Boy Scouts handbook, described by Stride as a metaphor for growing up, and going through that odd transitional period of being a teenager into your twenties. Songs like "Elvis Ain't Dead" were inspired by the girl who got away.
The upbeat, piano-driven pop of Scouting For Girls is peppered with themes of bittersweet nostalgia, and a celebration of being young-at-heart. On the fun track “James Bond,” the band pay tribute to Britain’s most popular secret agent.
And tracks like "I Need A Holiday" can be identified with by both young and old.
