Under The Domim Tree (Israel) & Elina (Sweden)
February 22, 2005
Welcome to FilmTalk.
This week, a film from the very first Swedish Film Festival in Singapore.
But first, to Israel with a film about young Holocaust survivors shown at the inaugural M1 Fringe Festival in Singapore.
Under the Domim Tree is a film that takes you to a Israeli youth village built to house orphan teenage survivors of the Holocaust.
Left with no family of their own, 15 year old Aviya and her friends stand in as family for one another.
By day, they laugh, play and study like any other youth. But by night, memories of their painful losses return.
They find refuge together under the domim or crab apple tree.

Another first in Singapore is the Swedish Film Festival also known as Swedenmade film.
The festival opens with Elina, an award-winning film starring renowned Swedish actress Bibi Andersson.
The film is about Elina, a 9 year old girl who lives in a village in northern Sweden.
When she returns to school one day after a long illness, she’s confronted by a strict teacher when she defends another pupil.
Alone in what she stands for, Elina finally escapes to the dangerous marshes.
